Function:
Isobutyric acid, also known as dimethylacetic acid, can be used to make esters with fruit flavor, as solvents and fragrances, etc.. It can be miscible with alcohol, ether and chloroform, and slightly soluble in water. Similar to n-butyric acid, it is mainly used to produce corresponding esters and used as raw material for synthetic flavor. Also used in the manufacture of varnishes and plasticizers.
Application:
- Used to produce various esters. Methyl isobutyrate has apricot aroma, propyl isobutyrate has pineapple flavor, isoamyl isobutyrate has banana flavor, octyl isobutyrate has grape flavor, and benzyl isobutyrate has grassy fragrance.
- Used in the manufacture of varnishes and plasticizers
- Isobutyric acid has some important derivatives which are industrially used to produce isobutyronitrile intermediatesandthen converted to isobutyl hydrazine hydrochlorideasthe raw material forinsecticide diazinon.
- Used for preservatives, leather deashing and disinfectants in organic synthesis
