Function: 

Isopropylthiogalactoside (IPTG) is an extremely potent inducer that is not metabolized by bacteria and is very stable, and is therefore widely used in laboratories.IPTG is commonly used in cloning experiments that require the induction of β-galactosidase activity. It is often used in combination with X-Gal or Bluo-GA for blue-white screening of recombinant bacterial colonies that induce expression of the lac manipulator in E. coli.IPTG acts by binding to and altering the conformation of the lacI inhibitory protein, preventing inhibition of lacZ, the gene encoding β-galactosidase.
