Function:
- As an intercellular signaling molecule, in indole-producing bacteria it controls various aspects of bacterial physiology, such as sporulation, plasmid stability, drug resistance, biofilm formation, and virulence.
- Indole is an imine with weak alkalinity. The double bonds of heterocyclic rings generally do not undergo addition reactions, but dimerization and trimerization can occur under the action of strong bases.
Application:
- In the field of spices: Indole has a unique aroma, with a floral scent at low concentrations. It is an important component of many floral flavors and can be used to blend jasmine, orange blossom, gardenia, lotus, narcissus, ylang-ylang, white orchid and other flavors. It is also widely used in tobacco flavors.
- Pharmaceutical field: Indole is an important pharmaceutical intermediate used in the synthesis of a variety of drugs.
- Pesticide field: Indole can be used to synthesize plant growth regulators.
- Dye industry: It can be used as the raw material for sulfur dyes and indigo dyes, and can also replace aniline as the raw material for 1,2,3-trimethyldimethylindole.
- Other fields: In organic synthesis, indole can be used as an important building block for constructing organic compounds with specific structures and functions, and can be used to synthesize some biologically active natural product analogs or new functional materials.
