Function:
1. Ethanethiol is an important organic synthesis intermediate, and the thiol group (-SH) in its molecule has high reactivity.
2. Ethanethiol has a strong and unpleasant odor, a characteristic that makes it an ideal gas odorizer.
3.In analytical chemistry, it is able to form stable complexes with some metal ions (e.g., mercury ions, copper ions, etc.).
Application:
1. It is used in the synthesis of pesticides, such as some organophosphorus pesticides. Meanwhile, in pharmaceutical synthesis, it can also be used to manufacture some sulfur-containing drug molecules, which may have special pharmacological activities, such as antifungal, antiviral and other effects.
2. In the delivery and use of natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas, the addition of a small amount of ethanethiol can avoid explosions, poisoning and other safety accidents caused by gas leakage by virtue of odor.
3. In the analysis of environmental water samples, ethanethiol can react with mercury ions in the water, and through some analytical techniques (e.g. spectrophotometry, chromatography, etc.), the resulting complexes can be detected, so as to determine the concentration of mercury ions in the water, which is helpful for the monitoring of heavy metal pollution in the environment.
