Function:

Role of chemical reaction intermediates: The chlorine atom on benzyl chloride has high reactivity and can undergo substitution reactions, coupling reactions, etc. It can easily introduce various functional groups to prepare compounds with specific functions. It is an important intermediate in organic synthesis.
Role of polymerization reaction: It is an important polymerization monomer. Its molecular structure contains vinyl and benzyl chloride functional groups. It can be copolymerized with other monomers or self-polymerized through various polymerization reaction methods such as free radical polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT), etc. to form polymers with different properties.

Application:

Organic synthesis: used as starting materials or intermediates to synthesize organic compounds such as drugs, pesticides, and fragrances.
Surface modification: can be used to modify the surface of materials, grafting them to the surface of materials through chemical reactions, introducing functional groups such as chloromethyl, thereby changing the properties of the surface of materials, such as increasing the hydrophilicity of the surface, improving the compatibility of materials with other substances, and improving the adhesion of the surface. It is widely used in the surface treatment of plastics, rubber, metals and other materials.
